Does anyone lubricate the portion of the handbrake cable that goes through the outer sleeve & if so what do they use & how do they do it?

I had the cable out of the car about three years ago making up an extension for the outer (to effectively shorten the inner) and lubed it then with a small amount of engine oil. I haven't touched it since but it still runs free. If I was doing it now I'd disconnect the rear end of the inner and "pull" the outer free by a couple of inches where it goes into the handbrake. You could then get some oil onto the cable and either let it work its way down by gravity or work it through by pulling the inner back and forth. I'd probably still use engine oil.
