Brake shims

The post on shims & brake squeal, being discussed elsewhere, (elan-f14/odd-wear-brake-pads-t23842.html) reminded me.
This pic once lived in the "Files Area", so thought it may stand another airing.
Can any one explain if, and how, this subtle change might have worked?

Possibly to permit the shims to be "easily" slid around the pistons rather than fitted over them by removal of excess material beyond the geometrical centre line?

Oh muted King!
I didn't use shims on mine after they fell apart but I thought, or seem to remember, that the shim came between the pad and the piston. Anyway, without them mine never squeeled.

Oh dear, a case of serious mind fade on my behalf.
Trouble is it's happening more often these days
