Brake Light Switch

PostPost by: Lotus Thijs » Mon Aug 09, 2010 10:48 am

Hi there!

Since I'm new to this forum I'll introduce myself. :) My name is Thijs, a 19 year student from Holland. My dad has a very lovely 1971 Elan +2 S130:

The car is a dream to drive... 8) This is our second Lotus, before this we had a 1969 Lotus Europa which we sadly parked into a field through a rather sturdy wooden fence... :|

Right now we have a problem with our Elan. The brake lights don't work! They stopped functioning a week ago, when I was driving back from a classic event near D?sseldorf, my father was behind me in a Porsche. He noticed that the brake lights switched on twice, and that was the last they did ever since.

I've checked the lightbulbs, no problems there... I checked all the fuses, no problems there... My conclusion is that it has to be the brake light switch. But I don't know where it's located. Can you guys help me out? If you think it might be something besides the brake light switch, let me know! :)

Cheers

Thijs

On my +2 the switch is mounted in the brake pipes in the fron of the chassis on the righthand side and is easliy visible from underneath the car. It is near the oil filter on the engine. It could be as simple as the connector becoming detached. It certainly happened on my car,

Good luck

On the later plus 2 the switch was a mechanical switch on the pedal box assembly in front of the brake reservoir. I am not sure when the change took place but it may be there on your 1971 car.

Problem solved. 8)

Not by me, but I took a trip to the local classic car garage. They helped me out very well by fixing the current switch. Now I know where it's located and how it works its just a matter of ordering a new one and replacing this one when it stops working again.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

Hi Thijs,

Good to know there are other young lotus enthusiasts  , I've just turned 20 and I'm a year into a plus 2 JPS restoration.

That's really awesome... My dad and I are currently restoring a very lovely Lotus Europa S2, a rather uncommon originally RH drive federal edition! :)

Sadly I don't have the budget for buying my own car yet, student with too many hobbies, so I'll have to settle with a classic motorcycle. 8)

Can I find a restoration topic of your Elan +2?

I'm guessing everybody here loves pictures of Lotuses, so here are some more:
