Girling Brake Servo

PostPost by: bcmc33 » Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:17 pm

On bleeding the brakes I wondered where the fluid was going as there was no resulting hard pedal - I now know ---- into the servo. :( :(

So the question is - where is the best source for getting it reconditioned?

Bypass the servo, fit some decent front brake pads and see if you live without it. I'm assuming your pedal box etc is in god condition.

Hi Brian, I presume you have the MK2 servo. Last September I had mine reconditioned off my +2 by Past Parts at Bury St.Edmunds, they charged ?200 including courier.
Collected on Tuesday returned on Friday.

That's what I did. Greenstuff pads on the front, tandem master cylinder, Aeroquip hoses to the calipers. It's a harder push but still stops well - and I don't have to worry about single-point failure or locking brakes anymore! :) :)

Galway, it seems we e back on this one again. As well as eliminating the single point of failure (hydraulic line rupture caused by rear transmission/donut failure), the insidious brake seal failure inside the servo is no longer an issue.

I would have thought that for the sake of a set of pads and a very small amount of plumbing for the bypass, it's a reversible mod that anyone could try.

OK, OK, I will go to Lister's tomorrow and get them to make me a bye-pass link.

I shall also send the servo away for reconditioning.

It will be interesting to see how the unboosted brakes work on my single pot front calipers.

Part of my mods is a 5/8" master cylinder.

While I was waiting for parts, I didn't bother with a link, I simply disconnected the vacuum line and plugged the port in the inlet manifold. Worked for me!

Oops! Sorry, Brian. I just noticed that you are planning to remove the servo to get it reconditioned. Guess you will need the bypass!

My servo has been dead weight in my car for around 30 years, but I finally got around to taking it out a few weeks ago.

For some reason I had always thought that the fixing bolts were rusted in, but actually they came out easy with a spanner in the wheel arch. Didn't even need to take the wheel off first.

Brian, don't forget to change pads as well. Quite a few posters on this forum seems to rate the Greenstuff pads highly for un boosted brakes. Also your calipers, if original Girling Type 14s are twin pots (OK opposed pistons).
