Front calipers

Got my front brakes apart at the moment for an overhaul too, popped the pistons and they are all getting a bit rotten! Who is the best supplier for replacement ones and are they available in stainless?
Has anyone upgraded the front brakes on their Elans to different calipers? Might be cheaper for me to buy new aftermarket upgrade than refurb what I have?

I've just up graded the front brakes on my Elan by fitting Plus two ones.
You will need plus two discs and plus two caliper mounting brackets.
The extra braking is considerable and well worth it.
It took me a mornings work.

lots of guys on this Forum recomend "Classicar" for their brake refurbishment service.
I've been happy with the job they did for me.
There has been quite a lot of discussion about stainless pistons & where to source them. Give it a search.
Yes there are upgrades but they are expensive.
Wilwood 4 pot alloy calipers will cost you at least ?500 for example.

Alisdair, I'm referring to Plus 2 calipers since you posted under that forum.

Front calipers are Girling 16Ps or 16PBs which were common calipers used for instance on many Triumphs of the time including GT6, TR6 etc. If you have a look at the on-line Rimmer catalogue you will figure out the cross fitments.

As such you can obtain new or refurbished calipers (check that externally they have been replated) complete with new pistons, hardware and seals from many of the Triumph specialists. If you want stainless pistons you will probably need to buy and fit yourself. Check that pad retaining pins are a good fit in the refurbished calipers.

You could go the route of vented discs and a single pot Ate fist type caliper - all easliy obtained Ford parts.

It is also worth asking down at your local autoparts place, as a few years ago when I went to replace a calliper on the spitfire I owned Rimmer Bros wanted ?65 for one but it turned out to the the same one used on the metro which my local autoparts store only wanted ?45 for.

RD enterprises ( http://www.rdent.com ) has stainless steel caliper pistons, but they ain't cheap.
