Brake leak question

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Tue Jun 12, 2007 7:23 pm

For the first time in 2 years, the brake system is leaking.

Took the car to a "get to know your car's limits/your limits" day at N. Wield on Friday, and spun it, locked it up, etc .... as you do.

Decided over the weekend to check out possible damage ...................
......... wheel bearings
......... clutch and brake fluid levels
......... tyre treads
etc.

Found that the brake master cylinder was 10-12mm below the max level (and it was on max originally). Put newspaper under the drivetrain overnight. In the morning, found drips under the mid-point of the prop, the diff, and also under the front cross member.

Cleaned everything up.
Pumped the system, leaving pedal wedged overnight.

No visible leaks. Everything seems dry.

What's up?

Beggar !!
Forgot to check the servo. Might have dumped in there.

Any other advice, please?

Regards,
Stuart.

Lots of heavy braking on said track day = brake pads wear = lower fluid level......unlikely but possible ?????
Brake fluid loss from poor fitting master cyl. top due to hard cornering on said track day and fluid sloshed about ......possible ???
Just a couple of suggestions to consider

Brian,

Thanks for the reply. When time has allowed, I've got under there and checked every union (they seem dry), and also cleaned the main feed pipe down the chassis spine to the rear calipers (basically the usual oil deposits). Nevertheless I am convinced there is an external leak somewhere. Being paranoid, I normally have newspaper under the car in the garage, and the only deposits usually seen are oil.
Clean brake fluid drips are therefore quite clear (but as to where they're coming from ..........?).

Have now removed the non-return valve from the servo, dipped it, and it is dry, so hopefully the servo is ok.

Have topped up the master cylinder, wedged the brake pedal, and will see what transpires in the next 24 hrs.

Regards,
Stuart.

Stuart, If you suspect the servo you could try taking out the one way vacuum valve and its rubber grommet, then getting some sort of dip-stick bent at a right angle and try dipping to see if there is fluid collected in the vacuum chamber, usually when a servo collects fluid in its chamber if you brake very hard then accelerate a cloud of white smoke will come out the exhaust as it is sucked into the engine.
