Hi,
When I put a Lotus 5 speed in my Elan I reused the same cable and all works well. However an extra few inches would help. ....(said the actress to the Bishop) perhaps another 4"
cheers

Interesting because I put a new cable in during the process of swapping-in a five-speed and while I don't recall which merchant I bought the cable from, I do recall asking if there was any difference and being told that both transmissions use the same cable. And I recall not being happy with either of the ways that it looked like I could orient the cable-drive unit with the cable connected.

Left hand versus right hand drive probably explains the issue in terms of cable routing as the speedo drive is off the right hand side of both 4 and 5 speed and in roughly the same location but the 5 speed is inserted from the rear while the 4 speed is from the side.
