+2 Dash - whats this Switch for?

PostPost by: hastu » Mon Oct 21, 2024 6:19 pm

Still assembling my +2 S130 i found Switches under the Dash. 2 Switches ssems to be for Drive and Fog Light. But in the upper right there is a Push Switch (blue Circle) that i have no idea what it is for.
In the Harness seems to be 2 Wires (white-Green and purple-red) for this Switch.
Any ideas what this Switch is for? Seems to be Original

Don’t think it’s original…

The colours are (in the Lucas scheme) as follows

White / Green : fuel pump #2
Purple / Red : Switches to map light, under bonnet light, glove box light and boot lamp when fed direct from battery fuse

According to https://www.mgexp.com/article/lucas-wir ... r-guide.50

I don’t think we can trust that. It’s likely to be a fan or fuel pump override, but trace the loom to be sure.

There is a switch in that position on my +2S. Its to test the brake fail light. Gary

No...I certainly haven't got that switch on my +2S130. I tend to agree with JonB I don't think that is original.

I run a 1971 Plus 2S and think you might be holding a button that when pushed zeros out the trip odometer.

Thanks for all your Feedback

I still think ist original, because the Wiring comes from a new Wire Harness (Autospark) and i think they base their wiring on Original Plans.

Because ist an eletrical Switch it couldnt be the trip Odometer (its mechanic).

it could really be the Test for the Brake Fail light. At least i found the Wire with Colour Purple-red on the wiring Diagramm. I will later trace the loom and report what i found

Mine is a one owner before me 1971 UK plus 2S130 transition model with fuses in the engine bay. It doesnt have a brake level warning lamp check switch and the wiring diagram for my model in the official workshop manual shows no such switch (the only "switch" in the wiring diagram for this circuit is the fluid level float switch itself) ..Having dismantled, cleaned and rebuilt my original brake fluid level float switch and seen the amount of gunk and corrosion in it, I concluded that failure of this safety feature is much more likely from a stuck and gunked up cork float on a steel pin and corroded contacts immersed in brake fluid than a faulty bulb...! In the end I decided not to reinstall this float : it seals badly with the master cylinder and leaks because of poor design and instead I bought a small plastic
float assembly incorporating a modern fluid sealed reed switch from Car Builder Solutiins which doesn't rot and fits into a standard master cylinder cap that doesn't leak ....and I put in an 'immortal'' LED warning lamp for good measure.. Tony

It's to test the brake fail light. It's a federal thing. One of too many.

I agree with that, but since it was there on my car I decided it should work. Gary

Hi.
It is the test button for the "Brake Fail Lamp"
Two wires that go to it are in the pictures below.
Cheers,
Steve.

I had that on a 1970 +2S. Spot and Fog individual also + lots of Fairy lights everywhere. Ashtrays, Clock, Puddle Lights bottom of Doors, Boot, 2 Lights Engine Bay.
Needless to say often a flat Battery.
