Brake and Clutch Pedal

PostPost by: Johnny America » Sun Jun 09, 2024 2:47 pm

Haven’t driven my car for a while and noticed when I depress the brake pedal the clutch pedal also moves down a bit.

Not enough to cause any clutch slip. So is this normal?

Thank you.

Pedal box probably needs a clean and a grease. I suspect it will only move a small amount which is slack space normally taken up by the spring. It shouldn't be of a high enough friction to overcome any pressure plate movement.

No, Not normal.
Seems like you have some stiction in the pedal shaft. You may for the time being get away with a squirt of WD40 or similar up into the pedal box shaft but long term you need to remove the pedal box and remove the shaft and rectify/lube accordingly.

Well that was an effort. Shaft had to be driven out. Split pins completely corroded in place. Brake pedal to master cylinder celvis pin was held in place using a split pin not an R clip so removal was fiddly and I had to drill out the pin.

Anyway, all disassembled, masters will be rebuilt and the pedal box cleaned up and repainted before refitting with plenty of white lithium grease to the pedal pivots.

Pedal box and pin

Completed my pedal box refurb today. All the metal parts, pedals, pedal box, pivot pin, spacing washers were sand blasted before the box and pedals painted with POR16. For the pivot pin and spacing washers I zinc plated these for lasting protection. The pivot pin can be seen above on top of the box.
Clutch and brake master cylinders both rebuilt with new seals. The everything reassembled with a liberal dose of white lithium grease on the pivot pin and pedals.

Assembled box above with new R clips on the clevis pins and pivot pin. Maybe now in better nick than when it left the factory???

while it is out consider making an access opening in the top. Make future service much easier. It has been detailed in the forum. Gary

Now refitted and sealed up with a removable top plate. Thanks for all the advice.

Nice job. What size 'R' clip for the master cylinder pushrods?

Robbie, I purchased a small box of a range of R clips sizes from a well know online auction site as they are always handy and only cost a few quid. Photo below if helpful.
