>PS is it wrong to enjoy the popping and banging on the overrun!?

Mine always does that.

Probably bad for the environment. :D

The real identity number of an Elan is the UNIT NUMBER on the VIN plate inside the engine compartment fastened to the fibreglass usually on top of the left hand foot compartment. This is what you should always use in dealing with DVLA.

The plate may also show an engine number, but often that is blank.

The chassis (subframe) number as mentioned above is usually stamped into the chassis on the flat bit near the exhaust down pipes. See lotus-chassis-f36/where-the-chassis-number-stamped-elan-1600-t26938.html#p179921

If you change the subframe don't bother to inform the DVLA! It will cause bereaucratic nonsense. Far simpler to buy some letter punches and punch the unit number onto the subframe.

The engine (block) number is on the block stamped into a flattish (but sloping) at top of the right-side engine mount

I altered my ECU map settings to get the pops and crackles on the overrun. One of the injectors gives a couple of squirts below 2000 rpm when the throttle is closed and shuts off at 1200, extremely antisocial but it 's a great soundtrack.
Kindest regards

Hi all,
Just by way of postscript, chassis number and engine number have been confirmed as follows:
Chassis: 50/1151 (so very close to yours, Kev!)
Engine: H17590 (and then a "B" or a "3" maybe).
Not sure if there are any records which would show whether these are a match, but at least they tally with what the DVLA have.
Thanks for all your assistance.

G......yes that's exactly right.
Al, your engine number is only 57 after mine! Amazing, given that Lotus numbers are all over the place!
It might be of interest to you to see what the body number is. It should be within a small rectangle at the back of the engine bay in the corner, near the solenoid.

Wow - that is very cool indeed. I will look out for the body number. And even better, my copy of the Miles Wilkins book has just arrived in the post so I can learn at my leisure!

if post 50/0928 (chassis No) then that's the switch to the electric fan

My Service Parts List shows the mechanical fan on all +2 production with the supplement of the electric fan added after 50/0928. My 1971 +2S always had both mechanical and electrical fans.

interesting......
Ive never seen a UK version with both......
maybe owners took them off the water pump in order to extend its life.......

I know mine came with the mechanical one on the water pump and I took it off and replaced it with an electric one infront of the rad for this reason as I had already had water pump fan issues on my other elan.......
