I see that the fully restored +2 on Ebay has just sold for ?10200, after previously selling for ?16000, is this more a sign of the economic climate or was it overpriced before.Either way a bit of a choker for the seller.

Yes I thought it was high ?20k's; have a look at http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sh ... w-car.html

I am not sure I would take The Sun as 100% factual but if they are right then he is looking to double his investment. :o

There was a lovely 1961 series 2 Elite sold at Bonhams in April last year and the purchaser paid in excess of ?45K including buyer's premium & VAT. It was re-sold at Bonhams this month and this time that vendor probably netted under ?30K after auction house charges and VAT .

The last couple of years have felt very much like the 1989 / 1990 boom, and I'm pretty sure that we are now in a period of re-adjustment back to where prices were 3 or even 5 years ago.

Its basic economics really, when a 30 year old car suddenly rises in price by 10% or 20% in a year, when inflation is 4% and bank interest rates are 1% or less....the high prices just are not sustainable.

I think that it's a healthier situation now, as there don't seem to be the old bangers tarted up to make a quick quid this time. 1990 / 91 was famous for dogs of E Types and Aston Martins coming on the market that were full of filler that was starting to crack, and being sold for ?25k when they were bought only 18 months earlier for the best part of ?100k.

But I guess that whatever happens over the next couple of years, there will always be a market for quality. Cars that are not only desirable, but have been restored to a professional standard with a good provenance, or are in original un-restored condition, will always be in demand.

The investors get burnt, as they have been in the housing market. But in the car market, a reduction in price can surely only be a good thing for the enthusiast.

My apologies if I am bumping this topic unecessarily, but not everyone may be aware that Matty's are advertising the Chris Evans car once again at a gulp! wait for it! ?35,000

Call me old fashioned but I would have liked to have expected clean carpets at that price

A chequebook Elan restoration at one of the specialists starts at ?50k, plus of course buying the car in the first place. ?35k for a minter doesn't seem too bad by comparison!

Prices are all over the place. I have watched really nice +2 on Ebay not sell for very little money. I started this thread as I needed to put a value on my car for the insurance but am none the wiser. I think I would have a melt down if someone hit it whilst I was out.

RE: the Chris Evans car = I would have thought this time of year the prices would be low? May be it is worth more if it has his name on the log book? I have Mick Miller on mine.

Sounds like you are thinking of buying this one Mark? Well Christmas is coming; buy it for the wife. I have 'bought the wife' many Minis over the years its the only way to get another car in the garage. :D

No, I'm not in buying mode...still have the BDA Plus 2 looking at her new chassis hanging up over her head, the Elite and S2 Elan in bits and a pair of early Plus 2 cars also in bits. The last two will be sold next year to give me some sort of focus (and chance!) to get on with the other projects.

Looks like some lucky boy or girl has got a new toy for Christmas then 8)

The advertised cost being nearly 5 times the advertised buy it now price of this tidy looking car http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-Elan-2s-130-1971-Plus-Two-/270866454840?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f10e61938

It's really good to know that there are still apparent bargains for entry level into this hobby.
