Another newbie - another question (first of many... )

PostPost by: Shiny_kit » Tue Feb 24, 2009 8:16 pm

Hi
picked up my new toy on Friday (1968 +2) after a few years playing with MGs. I've been lurking here for a while but decided now I have my car I should register and start to join in.

My first question - where can I get some Regency Red paint ! I only need a little bit, stone chips mainly, but when we went to Halfrauds today the PFY in the paint dept said they can't do paint for pre-75 cars as they don't have the mix instructions, even though I had the Lotus and the ICI paint codes... Any suggestions ? I have a couple of good paint/body shops locally but don't think they will be too keen on mixing 50ccs of paint !

Welcome to the wonderful world of Lotus ownership!

I also own a 1968 +2 - what's your chassis number out of interest?

I will have to check - once I work out where to look !

No luck on the paint front - having ordered it, I had an email from them today to say they don't have the mix for it as it's not a current colour. They can only mix it if I can provide a sample of the colour.

HI, On a similar theme, can anyone tell me who manufactured the standard Lotus colour in cellulose of Calypso Red of around 1985, I had my S4 resprayed at that time?. I now need an amount for touch-up. It was used on the Esprit and possibly other Lotus, I would suspect that it is now hard to obtain due to health and safety issues.

Thanks for any information, John.

John, try Halfords for some touch up paint...they claim to be able to mix pretty much any colour from the 50s onwards...at least on the mainland! I tested this out with the Maize colour on my '71 Escort Mexico, a rare and unusual colour, and it's a perfect match. Just tell them Calypso, Lotus, from the 80s and they should sort you out.

And here she is...with a bit of Lotus content for good measure!

Mark...............I tried Halfords, regards calypso red, they were not that sure of themselves, he messed about a bit on the screen and eventually said he needed the codes. So I Email
Lotus and they have told me, I.C.I. L42....PO30......GJ23. That info. may be of use to others so I`ve posted it.
Regards John.

Red paint sometimes fades badly and going back to the original paint just for touching up may not be the best way to do it. If you're lucky a good paint supplier may be willing (on a quiet day) to spend some time matching the present colour of the car if you park it outside their shop.

When I needed some touch up paint for my Carnival Red S3, I took the car to a local bodyshop where my father-in-law worked as a mechanic. I was asked to let them have the bonnet to send for colour scanning. It was returned the next day with two colour codes, having faded in eight years it now matches a Ferrari Red. The sprayer mixed me 50 mil and it is a perfect match.
