Oh of course it was JUST the look of the front air intake that they copied!!
Based on the performance possibly just a cardboard copy

When they first introduced it they banged on endlessly about how they analysed the character of classic British sports cars (the MGB was mentioned constantly). Did they mention much about the Lotus Elan?? No of course not because that's the one they copied and they hoped no one would notice!!
In England they did and pointed out that they paid tribute with the front intake deliberately mimicking the Elan.
Perhaps they forgot that some of you Aussies are civilised too.
I wouldn't wander to Miata.net with that above, they tend to hiss and spit, get in a snit and have a fit when that "theft" is mentioned.
I often used to meet a Miata/MX5 on the road dressed up in Elan Sprint livery around the Bexhill/Eastbourne area, he always waved if I was in one of the Elan’s and I always waved back. There are quite a few series 1 MX/Miatas like this, I think there was a company in Japan that did the treatment to various levels of mimicry. The Series 1 Miatas/MX5’s are classic in their own right now, no need to tag on to the Elan any more, they have their own history.
Kindest regards
