I believe it is from "Car Magazine" sometime in 1967 but am not certain and will try to find more info from the the person who passed it on to me.

Five speed gearboxes and no mention of Sprints, so just S3 S/E's... the Lotus box didn't come out till 72 (?) so which gearbox was being offered?

I've just noticed the offer of converting cars to 'airflow' spec, so the ad must be from '66/67.

Fifty quid for a 3.5 ratio diff! Happy days.

Here's a couple of shots of my engine, fitted during the early life of the car; so not an Elan BRM but an Elan with BRM.

Tim,
The ad is from "Car Magazine" dated September 1967 and the ad mentions the "New Plus Two"
When was the plus two announced/launched? if it was at the 67 London Car Show which used to be in October it would make sense for Mike Spence to be taking orders for BRM Plus Two's.
In the same magizine is an ad for a Wooler 5 speed gearbox conversion, maybe Mike Spence was supplying these when he refers to a 5 speed conversion.
The magazine is by courtesy of John Chamberlains archives.

elansprint71 wrote:Back in 2013 I had two lengthy conversations with Alan Rigarlsford about Mike Spence BRMs. Alan was their painter and painted all of the dealership cars, most of which arrived from Lotus unpainted; he kept a meticulous notebook, which detailed all the Spence supplied cars (70+ in total); his red 6x3 notebook was lent to Robin Alabaster, who refused to return it.

Alan told me there were plans for fifteen BRM Elans but, in the event only ten were made, he thinks there were both S3 and S4 cars and they were both FHC and DHC, approximately 50/50, two were LHD. Apart from one, which was painted Dark Jaguar blue with orange dayglo bumpers they were all Polychromatic Green with dayglo. The green paint came from BRM at Bourne, which was unusual!

In addition there was one (only) +2, painted blue, the registration was OVL313F, as in that advert and two Europas, one purple with black roof (registration UJB????) and another which was metal-flake green on Minilite wheels. His memory was remarkably sharp, even without his stolen note book, and he told me more interesting facts about the other BRM engined cars (customers asking for BRM engines to be retro-fitted, as is possibly the case with the white +2 in the advert) and the many Formula 3 BRM Twin-Cam engines produced by Mike Spence Developments.

Interesting he said Mike Spence were not the only people who fitted BRM engines, he mentioned IWR and thought there was at least one other supplier.

What a tw@t for not returning something that was not his.... an reason for this Pete?

Slightly off the subject of Elan’s , but very much focused on the topic of Mike Spence Ltd . I am also trying to research the company in the late 1960’s just after Mike Spence died. The company ran a number of cars in sports car GT racing and they were painted orange and mauve/violet. Does anyone have any information about the race cars or images of the paint ? They ran a Lotus 47 , Mercury GT , Ginetta g12 ( see image ) and chevron all in orange .

Does anyone know how to trace the engine# of a BRM engine (stamped on the rocker cover)? I’m trying to trace the one in a friend’s Elan+2
