Another newbie looking to buy an Elan +2

PostPost by: Jason1 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 8:09 pm

I just saw this pop up on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-Elan-2 ... SwlgZbT3o2

An early car with Alfa rear lamp. I have only seen a handful of these. If I had the room I would snap this up renew the chassis with a Lotus one and restore it.

Jason, hi, thanks for the heads up. Too much work for me, I'm looking for a car that doesn't need much. Just restored a TR6 chassis up so looking for something I can enjoy and drive straight away.

Thanks and regards
Robin

Update: Vince (vincereynard on this forum) invited me over to have a peek
at Toad, his yellow +2, and give me a personal view of his experiences.
I must confess to being impressed. He's obviously been to a lot of
trouble, research, care, time and some cost to get his baby up to a very
high standard ( I read all his posts before seeing him) . Having restored
quite a few cars myself I was able to see, appreciate, touch and
experience a job well done.
The underside is almost spotless with new bushes , driveshafts, chassis,
etc all looking immaculate. The engine bay is clean tidy and obviously had
some serious attentions , including rebuild, clutch etc. And yes the 5
speed box change felt positive and clear of unnecessary obstructions. A
few spots of the paint need a mop, which I believe he will be doing
leaving him with a very sweet looking body. Finally the interior needed
nothing , all very tidy and all present, no rips tears or unsightly bits.
Comapred with the other cars Ive seen at garages for ?20K and some his is
better by some way. Commendable and a credit to him. Regards Robin

Strange in photo of engine bay the sandwich plate to go between engine and bellhousing is lying on the side of engine bay. Seems a bit of sloppy work to me. How can you be confident that the engine has been built correctly  Piston rings gapped correctly etc :?

I consider this early car to be in need of total restoration including new chassis. For me the interest is in the early built number, Alfa rear lamps and 120 number plate.

Thanks for that Robin. Cheque's in the post! :)

I've now completed the rear end "update" with the adjustable wishbones etc and given
the body a gentle mop with a couple of coats of Meguiar's wax. There are still a few swirl marks just visible under direct light but I am probably being a bit fussy.

Good luck with your search.
