I suspect you?ll be surprised at the value of many little bits and pieces you (should) have!
If you have an original rear bumper in even half decent condition, you?re quids in! Tops of the doors. (Or bottom of the window if you prefer?) Inner and outer bits are pretty much unobtanium. Engine itself will have significant value. If you?re going down the breaking route, I would declare it on here and invite enquiries for bits?

Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?

I would auction site it, i.e Ebay as project cars are still fetching good money due to the engine value. The days of complete project cars for ?3750 are looooooong gone now! You'd want that for the engine alone today! Prices are on the increase for decent +2s which is doing good for project values.
However if you decide to break it, i'll be interest in original rear seat bases, side sill trims, moustache as mentioned already and a few other bits that my car is missing.

Engine prices have definitely pushed up the project prices in the Uk....... your ?3750 +2 is now ?6k ish but the odd thing is the finished car prices don't seem to have changed much?? the worrying thing is how hard they are to move on for 'sensible' money.

Hi Chris,
Yes that is the point really for me plus 2 prices are bonkers - my original thought was to race the car - re-mould Front, rear sections and doors bonnet / boot to make a light weight Plus2 but for that I need space.
As a general question I don?t understand why for example plus 2?s aren?t competing against each other in Road sports or swinging sixties - this is cheap racing with a bloody good car.
Regards
Steve

Hi Chris,
Yes, compared to an Elan then yes it is heavy but compared to other cars of the day then it is good handling excellent car and in say Swinging Sixties you can make it as light as you want.
You could start off with a complete car for 4 to 6 k sell the bits not needed and end up with a great low cost car compared to a start price for Elan maybe 20k and then you will need to spend a lot more to keep up with the other developed Elans.
I sound like I am trying to convince my self to keep the Plus 2!

Hi,
Have been looking at getting some parts ready to sell but have a question regarding cylinder head. In the picture you can see numbers / letters on the back of the head my other TwinCam heads don?t have this?
So what does it mean?

Most of the later heads have a number on them but with 2 letters and normally 2 numbers, Many heads as you observe had no number . Earlier heads had the engine number in this location. LP letters suggests its an engine number on an earlier head but 3 digits is not a normal engine number unless some was left off. Do you know the history of the head?
For the later numbering I believe these are head batch numbers, The letters are probably some sort of date code ( year and month. ) and the numbers some sort of sequential number of the head in that date code batch of production. I have never been able to decipher the code or seen any description of it.
The numbers at the top of the head in the second photo are the Lotus part number, the manufacturer( WM , William Mills) and the alloy for the casting (LM9), not sure what the WP stands for
cheers

Hi Rohan,
Thanks for reply.
The head is of a 1968 Plus 2 and the cam cover has the ghosting from the change of postiton of the Lotus lettering.
I was told that it was not the original engine as that was removed for a show - no idea if that is true or why you would even do that.
Having had my S4 Elan for 30 plus years I have never bothered looking for numbers - is the block also supposed to have an engine number? If so where should it be?
Not relevant but the car also has an original straight grained dash

My 1968 S4 elan had the two letters and 2 numbers on the rear of the head. On these heads the other numbers you showed on the rear face are usually on the bottom off the head on the face section outside the outline of the block. They appear on the rear face of the heads on early heads normally.
The engine number for a block used by Lotus should be on the top of the inlet side engine mounting boss. Often hard to see and read as it was lightly stamped (scratched if Lotus had mislaid / lost the engine number stamp set on any particular day ) and is typically covered in paint. If the block was used by Ford originally in a Cortina then I have seen the engine number is various different locations.
cheers
