rear brake caliper allingment

PostPost by: street » Sun Oct 08, 2023 7:54 am

Took car for test drive around the block, before i take it for compliance (in NZ), as part of the rebuild, i got new discs, cv driveshafts etc, fully along with fully overhauled rear suspension. When I installed everything i noticed that the discs appear to be slightly off centre, which meant i could only put slightly thinner pad on inside (toward diff) with thicker on outside (towards wheel). Everything felt very tight with no free wheeling on spinning up by hand.

I'm going to get car in the air over next few days, would shimming the calipers on inside of wheel bearing housing move then towards diff, thereby creating clearance.

Anyone experienced anything like this before.

Did you fit the dust shield when replacing rear bearings?
Only thing I can think that would laterally change position if disk relative to calliper.

Are you saying the dust shield is sitting proud, thereby changing position

If the dirt shield is in place and the circlip is fitted correctly, that assembly is correct.

'When I installed everything i noticed that the discs appear to be slightly off centre'

Probably because one or more of the ears on the outer driveshaft / axle is bent, and the axle ears need to be trued up in a lathe.

Sometimes they just need shimmed. Common on some makes. You can get shim washers from McMaster-Carr among others. While it's not absolutely critical to have the disc centered, it is desirable.
