Plus 2 volume questions

PostPost by: Lotus 50 » Thu Apr 06, 2023 2:26 pm

I think I must have downloaded the attached originality chart from here. My hope is that someone here will know about it.

Q1 The chart shows "1592 (also available in kit form)" for the original +2. Is the 1592 both kit and full production combined?

Q2 Does the chart mean that 944 Plus 2S Federal cars were made and no UK Plus 2S?

Q3 Are all of these +2s/130? "2013 (UK Cars), 315 (US Cars), and 381 (Non US)....includes 86 JPS/Black cars"

My car is a bit of an outlier. It is a LHD non Federal car, serial 50/0887. It seems to have none of the updates, although is is negative ground. Perhaps it was converted.

That chart is not complete and so you can not easily extrapolate total productions numbers from it.

I have attempted to do this before and even wrote an article for Club Lotus News magazine on the subject (see below). Since I wrote it in 2014 several other factors have come to light, which necessitated my revision of the numbers in the original article. If you do wade through it, you will see the usual disclaimer that nothing is certain in the world of Elans, but this is my best effort. I always attempt to be as accurate as I can, given the available information.

Thanks, that was quite helpful. It's interesting that Lotus made as many export Plus 2s for non US markets as for the US market. My Plus 2 is a LHD non Federal car, so it's one of them.

Just so I understand correctly, the +2 and +2S in the chart in the article include all markets and the allocation among markets within those figures is anybody's guess, right? So the federal count is the 315 N-designated plus an unknown portion of the 2535 earlier 'pre-letter' cars?

I'm also curious as to the 'transitional' cars- the ones that seem to have a mixture of +2 and +2S features, like mine. I'm sure that's the least-possible number to know, especially since they probably don't all have the same mix of features.
