+2 semi auto gearbox

I have just read that Team Lotus driver J Ickx was given a +2 and that It was fitted with a semi auto gearbox that was being used in the Grand Prix type76.
The idea being that he would get used to the pedal arrangement. R Peterson was testing the GP car with such a gbox and liked it.
Anyone able to add more to this story ?
