Plus 2 on LSD

PostPost by: jono » Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:00 pm

No, not in the Austin Powers sense

Just wondering at what state of tune a Plus 2 would benefit from a limited slip diff :?

Has anyone gone down this route and if so which unit is favourite?

I'm sure you may need one if racing, if the rules permit, but for road use? My BDA engined Plus 2 develops about 170bhp, and it certainly doesn't need a LSD. Because of the gearing and where the power is made (i.e.above 4000 rpm) take-offs are quite sedate, and corners / roundabouts, especially in the wet, are a nice controllable tail-out experience :D

Interested in your other quest...a windscreen rubber for a Plus 2. Is that with the wide chrome metal trim rather than the plastic chrome push-in trim? I am restoring chassis number 32 which also has the wide metal trim, and will need a rubber. Have you tried the normal suppliers? You have me worried now!

Possibly mis-reading the post reply....

But....

When I went looking for window rubbers last year Sue Miller had them.

She talked me out of changing my front windscreen one as it was a bonded one and would have been very difficult to get out without breaking the glass...

Try Sue.

Chaps,

Yes, it's the endless one with the wide stainless steel 'T' shaped trim which pushes in, not the plastic one. I think this is off an original consul Capri and I understand the rubbers are now obsolete although seemingly a supply turmed on Ebay a year or so ago.

It makes all the difference to the look of the car IMO.

I will try Sue Miller but suspect I know what the outcome will be :(

Back to the LSD.

I find with my S4 that the inside spins up exiting tight corners. I have an LSD on the bench ready to go in this winter. I went for the Quaife (sp?) type.

I will be happy to post up my comments. You will have to wait until next spring though as I hope to be enjoying driving my Elan as soon as the weather picks up. Fitting the LSD will be this winter's project, possibly while the body is off being resprayed.

LSD in Elan definitely needed in tight corners if enthusiastically both on track and road. I have run a Quaiffe for many years and it stops the inside rear spinning without affecting handling.

A Plus 2 with wider track and longer wheel base does not suffer the same degree of weight transfer off the inside rear wheel and LSD not needed on road in my experience in my plus 2. I suspect in a stiffer set up and 180 hp race configuration a LSD would be needed on the track in a plus 2 also but never raced a plus 2 so dont really know.

cheers

I have a Trans-X, clutch plate type in my plus 2. Works very well, definitely more stable and the rear end is progressive and controllable. If you were running a nicely set up road going elan, I think you would feel the difference and benefit from it.
