Which type of rocker cover?

PostPost by: seaandmoor » Sun Jun 11, 2006 9:22 pm

Hi all,
It's been bothering me for some time.... that there are several types of rocker cover for the plus two elan. Some just have 'lotus' over the front of the cover, some have 'lotus' over each side of the cover, some have 'big valve and others again 'big valve sprint' or '130' over the front of the cover. There are one or two others which are different again. Also there seems to be two or three 'standard' colours. Does any one know (and if they do can they enlighten me :-))
Which colour rocker with which wording is correct for the different models in the production time line from the first plus 2 through to the 130/5 ?
I'm sure I can go to sleep easily now, secure in the knowledge that someone, somewhere will have all the answers. Thanks in anticipation of all your help. ZZzzz

Hope you slept easy and didn't have nightmares about cam cover's
Let me give you my thoughts on the subject,
As far as I ever seen (could be wrong though) I am only aware of three types fitted by Lotus, (there are others like Holbay/Vagantune/Cosworth etc but these were after market)
The first type had Lotus on each side and were fitted up untill the advent of the Twin Cam Escort (some time in 1968) These were painted verious colours denoteing the power output of the engine and application. See the Wilkins book as he has details of these although I dont agree with all of his list.
The Twin Cam Escort had a large air filter accross the engine which obscured the Lotus names so Lotus then used a cam cover with the LOTUS across the front (this could be urban legend but is what I was told)
The final CamCover came with the big valve Sprint engine (1971) and had LOTUS BIG VALVE across the front, all of these were fittted on the plus 2's as well.
The only other variation I am aware of is the Europa which had the cut out for the rear seal (cam driven alternator) and I have seen the words LOTUS BIG VALVE either facing forward or facing backward.
Hope that didn't put you back to sleep
