Test Drives

PostPost by: Robbie693 » Wed Nov 03, 2004 10:13 am

I recently went to see a Plus 2 as a prospective purchase and thought I had better get some insurance in order for me to do a test drive.

When I called the insurance company (Footman James) they told me I couldn't insure a car I didn't yet own...

I am sure when I bought my last Elan they covered me by setting up the insurance as if I had bought it and told me to simply cancel the cover if I didn't.

As I obviously bought the car I didn't have a problem, but when I tried to do the same this time they wouldn't cover me.

In the end I had to tell them I had bought the car and insured it, went to see it and then had to cancel the policy as I didn't buy the car (which cost me 30 quid for admin fees  )

This seems a ridiculous situation - they don't do cover for test drives either.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? It would seem foolhardy to test drive a car without cover not to mention the owner agreeing to let me drive his car without insurance!

What does everyone else do?

Same problem...
Only route I cold see out of it was if your normal car policy covers you to drive other cars 3rd party..
Mine did, so I trusted that I wasn't going to crash the car myself..
Not satisfactory, I know..

I suggest that you find a more agreeable seller. When I bought my +2, the previous owner paid to put me on his insurance  Perhaps that was what clinched the deal for me!
