History of Lotus and Cosworth relations

PostPost by: HCA » Tue Oct 03, 2023 1:45 pm

I have of late had a fascination of the various relationships in the days of Ford, Lotus, and Cosworth - the various players, their movements and designs. Everything must have moved at hurricane speed in those days - in fact I wonder where they found the time to design with everything else going on!

Is there, might anyone know, a book/publication of the definitive history of Cosworth? Lots of snippets on the internet, but hard to assemble how the Ford and Lotus influence affected things. Duckworth is cited as a gearbox designer with Lotus and accredited with the creator of the sequential box, yet he jumps out of the Lotus bed and immediately accredited with the DFV engine design, Whilst Costin stayed on at Lotus as race engineer and (?) chief engineer of the Elan program AND doing Cosworth work in private! How does that work?! And why (how much did it cost?) to design a new head for the BDA when the Twincam was already there crying out for an upgrade - especially as the BDA produced less bhp than the Twincam..? (OK, it was short lived until they got the BDB going...).

And who was/is(?) this Mike Hall? Because Duckworth was busy with the DFV engine, he delegated the BDA design to Mike Hall. I can see no history for him! Surely there must be something on the person who gave Cosworth their grass root engine family?

I've got a good one at home, but I'm not there at the moment. I think it is simply titled "Cosworth", but when I get back in a few hours I'll grab and post a picture.

I’ll chime in with two books:
“Cosworth, The Search for Power” by Graham Robson and “The Power to Win” by John Blunsden.

Strongly suggest the Keith Duckworth biography - First Principles. Really detailed and well written and clarifies many of the points queried.
Being of a certain age, enchanted with DFVs and BDAs etc, it’s no surprise that my son now works for Cosworth!
