I came across these correspondence course notes for 'colonials' they cover electrical basics in period.
Good background reading and useful checking procedures.

I guess about that time.
I read (wiring?) about the beneficial change to positive earth as the current (got to keep punning) standard.
After reading them one does wonder why it changed back.
You'll notice that the voltmeter pictures show a positive feed.
They also refer to individually braided cables with the tracer colour spirally woven - I've never seen those.
Maybe dated but fundamentally very sound papers.

Marj,
Thanks for these. Do you have any of the training for the Lucas mechanical fuel injection. I'm going to have to set up the system on my 4 cyl 1300 BDH (not an.Elan though) from scratch

I scrolled through the ignition one really really quickly hoping that my tired old brain would stop me on bits of interest and there were loads of them, whilst I dont kid myself that I know everything ignition systems have always been an obsession, I have loads of reference books and designed and made a programmable ignition system in a previous life plus several ignition triggering modules.
Hands up those of you that knew why the tip of the Lucas rotor arm has its particular shape? I certainly didnt, its to stop the engine running backwards, my ignition modules did not prevent that until I had wrecked a couple of valve trains, Lucas bods had it sussed and resolved in the 50's!
I look forward to reading them all at length and will probably print them all to add to my reference library.
