James, that is very useful, thanks for doing it.
One point with the ZF S5/18-3 is that the upper gears on the layshaft press on and can be changed. This allows a pair of 0.80 gears to be used for 5th gear which is far more useful than the 0.874. I acquired a pair of 0.80 gears in the UK for next to nothing since the racing guys place no value on them.

If you change the 5th gear on the ZF as I did you get:
1st: 2.99:1
2nd 1.76:1
3rd 1.30:1
4th 1.0:1
5th 0.80:1
I found these to be very nice, useful ratios-certainly they would work well in a Plus 2
I really liked the dog-leg first gear which meant that 4th to 5th was in the same plane and very fast.

Thanks for the 5 speed ratios. And David for info on the 0.80 OD in the ZF.
Do you know how easy it is to change first gear on a ZF?
Here is an update with the latest info

James, during a rebuild of the ZF changing the 5th gears is quite simple. On the mainshaft it simply slides off but on the layshaft you need heat and a press, but it is not difficult. You have to figure out which are 5th gear--it is not the end two!

Here is a pdf of the workshop manual for the ZF S5/18-3 transmission:
http://www.alfamontreal.info/Montreal/ZFmanual.pdf
It was from this that I learned how to overhaul the box and how to swap ratios on 3rd, 4th and 5th gears.

David
Thanks for the link to the ZF manual. Great info! The ratios for CAR appear to only reflect a small selection of was is available. Looks a lot more complicated than a 2000E box (the only one i have ever over hauled)
