The cost of second hand Elan parts ...

Given the price Elan parts are making on eBay (in the UK at least) I wonder how long it will be before some people start breaking their cars for parts rather than restoring them?
?650 for a steering wheel
?60 for an ashtray
?50 for a pair of hood rail finishers
?54 for a starter motor cover (a Ford item with a dent hammered in it)
?200 for a pair of side indicators
?121 for a nose badge
?1700 for a couple of window frames
?5000 for an engine
To name a few...
Suddenly makes ?25k for a complete car suddenly seem pretty reasonable .

I agree the prices these idiots are asking is way over the top. Of course, being an idiot and asking these prices doesn't mean anyone (but another idiot) will pay them. Looking at the US Ebay half of the expensive items are listed about 10 times. Bottom fishing . . . .

The 'funny' thing is that some of these parts can often be bought from reputable classic Lotus dealers for a lot less

There are so many idiots in this world, and on Ebay. The trouble is, they all seem to find me, when I list some fings.
I listed a NOS kettle that ended in the week, start price ?15. A creature won it for ?21, and then sent this message.
How come there were 3 bids
The second bid lucks suspect, like bumping up the price. Not very happy.
Please reply
Twat. I was straight on to Ebay to bend their ears. They sent him a polite little message, but I asked them to cancel the sale, which they did. I cannot be doing with morons who do not realise they are taking part in an auction, who cannot spell, and accuse me of being dishonest.

I have a similar story of an idiot who told me "they said i was the winner of the auction, then the next time i looked someone else had won it!"

?65 for second hand used (torn) Dellorto gaskets!! I think you can take 'period' parts a bit far Would you fit a 40 year old fuel line to your pride and joy?
When I think about all the old 'period' parts I have thrown out over the years, air filters, oil filters, brake pads, tyres, engine mounts, split rotoflex coupling, used Dellorto gaskets ... Anybody want a used head gasket for a reasonable ?100 (offers accepted).... It's at least 25 year old and only been used once.. it's 'period'

I am obviously one of those idiots as I have listed a couple of S3 door/window frames at high prices, but with the make an offer option. I will keep relisting until someone makes an acceptable offer.
You can catch some tasty fish bottom fishing
When selling, only a fool would be prepared to sell a rare item for less than it is worth. eBay will find that price for you. However, I have also given parts away.
Over the years I have sold most of my unwanted Elan parts on eBay, with most of them going abroad. Quite a few have gone for more than the then current retail prices, but we are in the enviable position of being in the right country. Owners in places such as Japan and South Africa have a harder time of it so eBay is a viable option. Of course there are quite a few people who can't be bothered with dealing with main dealers or specialist parts companies and find eBay an easy one stop shop. Click to buy, click to pay, wait for delivery.
Buying from eBay isn't compulsory, but it is a great place to start your search, IMO. Where else can you find a pair of window frames in pretty good condition for sale?

If people pay 'silly money' for something on eBay, it's not the seller who is the 'idiot' ..
Just look at any classic car magazine these days and it's full of adverts for cars without prices ...

Ebay has always been a bit of a mystery, you often see parts that are still easy to obtain going to more than you can get them from any of the Usual suspects? Then if you get some thing NOS that hasn't been made for a number of years the purists bid it out of all sanity.
In my opinion Ebay gets a bit addictive, its almost like they will pay that bit more for the rush of winning an Auction
I'm waiting for some one to make exact copies of the Door rubber or screen rubber, i guess that will be another that fly's off the shelf.
I guess the more value these cars pick up the more ???? NOS Purist parts will get, after all a part or a car is only worth what some one is prepared to pay for it.
