Hi! i would like to know some infos about what i have to check when i have to see a car that i want to buy (Elan). About the engine, the frame, the body etc., some common issues, where to look and things like that.
Also: is it easily restorable a car like an Elan for one like me that is very capable in diy? fiberglas, engine etc

Matteo,
There are absolutely loads of rebuild threads on here for you to read. It isn't an easy or short process and a full restoration could take a couple of years depending how much time and effort you have to throw at it. There have been a lot abandoned projects sold here too which again is evidence that it ain't easy. If you are determined you will at the end be a lot wiser, have empty pockets and a very nice appreciating asset which more importantly you get to enjoy!

When checking out an Elan there are 3 basic questions in my mind
1. Body condition - body and paint is the most expensive and / or time consuming thing to fix ... look at it carefully. Personally I am not a fan of concourse body work and fibreglass does not rust and is largely non structural so you can live with a less than perfect body and paint in my opinion. A great way to beat down the sellers price but nothing to worry about IMHO
2. Chassis condition - this is critical but also relatively easily and cheaply fixed with a replacement chassis / sub frame so understand the issue but dont worry about it to much. Just pay the right price if it needs fixing
3. Engine and drive train condition - it is all fixable and not that expensive if you know what you are doing and can do the basic work yourself.
Price all three factors into what you pay and what you want and you will not be dissapointed
