The Pits

PostPost by: archigator » Tue Jul 15, 2014 1:32 am

I went to a muffler shop to get a new exhaust system installed a while back. Once I negotiated the pit, the muffler guy in the pit below had his acetylene torch in-hand, ready to fire it up, when he noticed a slight glimmer of moisture on the drain plug at the bottom of the stainless steel gas tank. Apparently galvanic action had slowly eroded the threads on the drain plug over the years, and almost imperceptable leak had resulted.

Thank God he didn't fire the torch up! (It made me nervous that he felt that he needed to use it in the first place.) I nursed the car home and immediately drained the tank and ordered a new drain plug from Dave Bean. Something you may want to check next time you're under your 40+ year-old Elan.

I think he also needs a tyre edge on that pit as well, that looks mighty close to going in

Are you sure the tank is ok? If the threads on the plug are deteriorated,,,well,,,
