What did you do to your Lotus today...

I think I recall from years back my Plus 2 oil pump ring was the same as one on a spin on filter. Could I be remembering correctly? John

It's not the same sa the spin on filtre seal which is a flat rubber washer.
An "O" ring from the Carbs to Head can be used though.

Took the car out for it's first official drive in possibly 30 or more years.

Went to the exhaust shop to have a little work done with the blow torch in anticipation of being checked and approved for licencing by an engineer .

These are great little cars. I had forgotten what fun they are to drive. Felt a little wobbly around corners with heavy steering but once I put 25 psi in the tires she was nice and solid without being crashy and the steering was light once moving.

Should be licensed in a month or so. :D

She might be a bit loose with 25 lb in the front and 20 would be more usual. Good luck with the validations.

Finally completed my Gearbox mount replacement. The support had been modified, presumably in the 70s during a chassis change, to take the later rubber unit and I had to return to St Wilkins to change type.

The spacer on the gearbox had a 7/16" stud instead of 3/8" so I had to ream that out and then struggled to line up the support bracket with the chassis, but won.

Having sealed up all the exhaust holes I could find I was disappointed when the car still sounded coarse, like the engine had no rubber isolation, and found that the RH engine mount had also failed!

I jacked up the engine and stuffed a cut-down front suspension rubber into the top of the mount and that did the trick. With the rattles in the passenger door suppressed (by tightening all its panel attachment screws!) the car sounds and drives like new and the gear box and clutch work more smoothly. At last!

Are you suggesting 25 front and 20 rear? Wouldn't that be a bit tail skittish? I am using 175/65 r 13 tyres of dubious origin on 6" wheels.

Mrs Lyle and I went for a drive recently on a cool evening. It was in the mid 50's F. I noticed that the heater output was mixed, with, at best, tepid air coming out of the outlets.

Which was worrisome, because on Friday we leave to drive the Natchez Trace Parkway - a 440 mile parkway maintained by the US Park Service which runs from Nashville, TN to Natchez MS. The route was originally a buffalo migration route, then an Indian path, then used by farmers and traders in the early 18th century.

Anyway, it's likely to be cool at times, so the heater was a concern.

It turned out to not be a big deal - I swapped in a 92 deg C thermostat, and voila, problem fixed.

Looking forward to this drive - should be about 1600 miles over about a week. A good test to see how reliable I've been able to make this car over the last few years. Wish us luck.

Terry - I run 20 front and 25 rear on 165/70/13s and all is very fine indeed. :D

Graeme, Brings back memories of when we finished my 26R, that first drive for me was worth all the years waiting to find one and the hard reservation yards!!!

I've been tracking down sources for German/Japanese quality Issue 18 inner bearings in Australia.... Oh what fun its proving to be, so far I source a pair of german manufactured bearings and will know tomorrow if I managed to find another two pairs.

Certainly not! The rears should always be pumped higher and the handbook suggests 5 lb difference. But I'm not qualified to advise actual pressures on such a different tyre size from standard.
