Elan Models

PostPost by: atthelimit » Sat Oct 21, 2023 11:52 am

As winter approaches and it gets cold in the garage, it will soon be time to go into the back bedroom for some small Lotus fun. As an avid Lotus fan when I’m not playing with the real cars I make Lotus models.

Very nifty! How did you make the Plus 2 body?

Many years ago I tried to get a manufacturer to produce a small run of +2 models in this scale but could not get enough takers to proceed so I decided to make one myself.

I got some side on drawings which I scaled to 1/24, etched these onto balsa wood and carved out a shape using photos and measurements from a real car. Then I made a mould and from there I made the resin body. In truth my carving was not so hot but resin and filler, sanding and filling got me to the shape you see in the photo. It’s not perfect but it’s a fairly decent representation. Because it’s 1/24th scale I ca pinch parts from other lotus 1/24th scale kits like to the Europa and S3 Elan which are easy to obtain and use the wheels, tyres and other bits but still lots of bits to make. I’ll do more over the winter but once the good the weather turns I’ll run out of time. So will it be finished this year I don’t know. Much like my real car!

Hi, I've been looking for a 1/24th scale Twin Cam Engine, have you any idea if a kit exists?
Thank you

Hi,

There are a few you can use but none are cheap.

The Tamiya Lotus Europa 1/24 kit is a full detailed kit which includes a big valve engine in good detail. £35

The 1/24 die cast Elan model by Welly has engine detail which you could pinch £30

In the states you can buy a really great resin engine but it is $112 so about a £100, too much for me.

Years ago a firm called Mini Exotics produced a resin kit which was around £10-15 from memory. Can’t find them now though I bought a load at the time and have one left which will be for a model of my car when restored.

This is the green engine used in the 26r photo in the original post.

Hi here is the link https://www.shapeways.com/marketplace/m ... s/vehicles

Engine available in various scales and you have to buy in two parts to get a complete engine which adds up to the $100+ figure. The actual maker is AJ Wheels and you can ask them to make in any scale. Could not find the link to 1/24th scale when I looked but I’m pretty sure they can do it.

Problem with stuff from the states is shipping and import tax on top.
Hope this helps

Some rare pieces in there with a High Tech Gunze Elan AND a Joker 26R?

Shame the Mini Exotics TC isn’t available anymore considering the availability of the Gunze S3 without an engine and also other applications like Tamiya’s Seven. I don’t believe the AJWheels model can go down to 1/24 scale.
