gearbox snap ring.

Good evening,
I am in the process of reassembling my gearbox and it is all going according to plan apart from a puzzle. I originally stripped it down 4 months when it would not engage reverse and discovered the remains of a rail sleeve restricting the reverse mechanism.
I have started putting is back together but have two 1 1/4 (approx) snap rings. One is used to hold the input bearing in place on the input shaft, but where does the second one go? I cannot see it on the manual illustration. Any suggestions? The big nut on the output shaft holds the first/second gears in place, while a much smaller snap ring holds third gear in place.
Thanks in advance for any help. I don't wish to progress any further in case I have missed something. It is a mystery!
Cheers,
David

The snap ring should hold 1st/2nd synchroniser assembly onto the main shaft (if you have a mainshaft without the separate sleeve that first gear runs on).
It should be slightly thinner gauge than the one that holds the bearing on to the main drive.

HTH,
You may be onto something. I have been following the instructions/illustrations in the lotus manual, which show the early assembly, with the steel bush with the first gear (which I do not have) and no snapring. If there is a snapring on the first gear, I may have missed it, in which case, I will have to disassembly the mainshaft again. Drat!
Thanks!

Hi,
I think the snap ring to which you refer is fitted to the mainshaft holding the 1st 2nd synchro hub in place, 1st gear is then fitted. Not shown in most, if not all, exploded views of the gearbox.
A lesson to those who believe the workshop manual has all the answers.
Ron.

Thanks very much for your advice; yes, it was the snapring which holds the first/second syncro in place. It is not mentioned in the workshop manual, and a warning for anyone attempting the same exercise!
Cheers,
David
Glad you're sorted!

That's a useful break-down of parts but it's not relevant to the problem as that picture relates to 3rd/4th synchroniser and not 1st/2nd synchroniser!
