Ours are just about to go down.

From July 1st a year on the road will cost me NZ$48.75, or GBP 22.50 !
The cost is calculated on safety ratings, apparently my Sprint has "5 seats".......
Maybe if I tell them it has 2 the cost will be even less
The only other cost is 2 MOTs at about NZ$55 a time.
Insurance is not compulsory here but I pay NZ$200 a year for comprehensive.

The road tax in the UK is zero for classic cars, but you still have to "tax" it so they know the car is on the road, or SORN it, which lets them know it's off the road. Basic third party insurance is included in the rego in New Zealand if my memory serves me correct.
When i was travelling in 2004 I was given an unroadworthy Nissan Prairie that had been fitted out for camping, the guy had loads of spares and gave me the use of his Tools, garage and even put me up in his spare room while I fixed it up, if that wasn't one of the kindest acts of a stranger on its own I got to know him because I was seeing his ex!
Anyway registering and insuring a car in the UK if you are a foreigner, non UK resident and non UK license holder is very difficult and very expensive if you are able to do so, I was delighted to find that I could register the Nissan using the address of a backpackers hostel where I was staying, that it only cost me the equivalent of ?40 in $NZ for 6 months registration which included 3rd party insurance, what a result!!!!
The warrant of fitness cost was very reasonable IIRC.
I dont know the current prices in the UK but my car cost ?170 when I last taxed it in 2004, as an old supposedly polluting diesel vehicle I am told it would be a lot more now, here in France my basic fixed motoring costs are very low, there is no road tax but you effectively pay it one time only when you register a vehicle in your name, it cost me ?170 in 2005 but as i am still driving the same vehicle it works out at ?15 per year and reduces each year.

- $14.50 For yearly "Safety" Inspection ($7 to the test place, $7.50 on top of the registration fee)
( Modern Vehicles are more ~$30 as there is an "emission" test also.)
- My insurance is ~$300/year
You can also register the vehicle as a "Antique" which give you 5 years registration for $50, it also removes the yearly inspection. However it limits the use of the car to "exhibition, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest". Which is quite limiting here. I doubt the police are that bothered about enforcing it but always risk you'll come across one who does want to enforce it.

Rego here in Australia is around $700 for all normal use cars and that includes compulsory third party personal insurance. Here in Victoria no annual MOT or equivalent is required until you sell a car at which point it must have a road worthy certificate to be transferred to a new owner,some other Australian states do require and annual inspection.
Historic and classic cars can get club registration that my Elan and Plus 2 have ( essentially cars more than thirty years old, but can include a new hot rod based on an old car). This is approx $50 for 45 days road use a year or $95 for 90 days use a year and includes the required compulsory third party personal insurance. The are no limits in how the car is used for the licenced days a year.

My Elan and Europa are Antiques, I don't bend the rules and I find it gives me pretty well all I need. Depends how you use the cars, of course!

Here in Georgia, the basic license plate fee is $20. If you want to get the 'hobby Antique's plate that's an additional $35 a year, which is a bit dumb in my opinion. A personalised plate is also an additional $35.
A car of this age is not subject to any inspections, although the only type of inspection we have is for emissions but this only applies in more densely-populated counties and only for cars/trucks up to 25 years of age and under 10000 lbs. gross weight.
I'm too lazy to look up what I pay for insurance, but I have pretty good coverage for different things. Georgia has some of the highest auto insurance rates in USA but insuring a Lotus tends to be fairly inexpensive, I think due to the glassfibre body having a low threshold for total loss. I do recall that my former Esprit cost less to insure than the late-model VW GTI I had at the same time. Looking into the coverages included in the policy, everything was higher for the Lotus except for collision damage- and it was low enough to make the entire policy lower than that for the VW.

As explained by The Veg, the license fees are reasonable in Ga and there is no emission testing needed for older cars. Our tags for "historical car" is only decorative with the picture of an antique car on it. There are no special restrictions or privileges that go along with it. Basically, just another state income source.
Insurance varies - I use Collector Car Insurance for our Elan. It only added about $150 per year to our policy (I can't remember the exact amount for the Elan. Our 6 collector cars total to $1000/year and a little over 1/2 of that is the 2005 Lotus Elise). That policy does have some restrictions on it - not a daily driver, must be kept in a garage, etc...

Right, thanks Drinkman for reminding me about the subtleties of insurance. Both the Esprit and now the Plus 2 have been on 'regular car' policies because I don't have a garage*. And they still came in favourably compared to the daily cars.

I think the annual registration is $80, insurance about $250 with a generous mileage limit.
Although our Province does not have any inspection requirements, many of our local clubs put on spring inspection meets where we formally complete check lists on our cars. The inspection reports are compiled and used to demonstrate to the government that we don't need more regulation.

You are talking about the Warrant Of Fitness (WOF) I assume.
Does it have to be done every 6 months or do you perhaps have 2 vehicles?

Yes, with a car of my age every 6 months, regardless of mileage.
I put my Sprint's rego on hold for 6 months of the year, at no cost.
Whilst off the road no WOF is required.
Once a year at the beginning of Summer I go and get a WOF, and 6 months rego.
Now that it's so cheap may keep it going all year.
Once I get the engine back in that is.......

Full cost is ?54.85 per year, but most garages offer some sort of discount. The test is computer driven now - the tester logs on with the vehicle registration before he begins the work. If he finishes the test too early, the system complains and tells him he hasn't done the test properly.

I am paying a lot less for insurance than you. Mine is at about $135 per year from AMI, full cover and no restrictions were discussed. Maybe your Sprint is a lot more valuable than my S3 !
I assume my rego will drop to a similar level as yours. My rego went down considerably when the car was 40 years old as it became a vintage.
