Join a car club.
If you are a member of Club Lotus, they have a system of giving a valuation by photographs as far as I know.
Some insurance companies will accept the opinion of a figure suggested by a known authority on the cars, such as the local organizer of a classic car club.
Some companies require you to join a club to get a discount.
Ask the insurance company what they want you to do.
Ask other members of the club.

Hi Phil,
I insured my S3 following a complete rebuild with Chaucer Insurance through Carole Nash
I offered my valuation and they requested pictures to verify condition etc
Policy came with full breakdown cover included at a very reasonable premium
May be worth a try.

This is certainly a facility offered by Club Lotus which is who I used last year. You send them at least four good quality photos of the car showing the front, rear, engine and interior, at least of one of which must show the car's registration plate. You tell them the general condition of the car and all work that has been done and when. For a fee (I think it is ?15 now) they will send you a valuation by return post. Give their office a ring to get a form sent to you - here's the contact web page http://www.clublotus.co.uk/contact-us.aspx. My 1971 Sprint FHC was valued at much more than I expected.

Paul Matty also does valuations. Send them photographs or better still go and show him the car. You'll need a valuation/condition form for him to fill in and sign. They charge ?10.00 which goes to charity
