Hello everyone, I’m the winning bidder of the MrBonus Modified 1967 Lotus Elan S3 SS sold yesterday on BaT.
I have been car mad for as long as I can remember but I’ve never owned a classic, when this Elan showed up last week on BaT I thought this could be an opportunity. The overall condition of this Elan together with the recent work made it appear really worth considering. There were two big draws for me, first, Coupe, convertibles are not my thing, and second, the Delaware history. I’ve lived in Delaware for 30 years since moving from England, so I already have that in common with the Elan, both English, living in Delaware.
I have little interest in owning a show car, way to much time and effort for me but I can really understand those who do and appreciate the results. This car is never going to be show car with the wheels and arches, and while they aren’t to everyone’s taste I’m not a purist when it comes to cars.
My intentions for this Elan is to be able to drive it, fix it when it breaks, (I’m under no illusions that it won’t break,) and drive it, fix it, repeat. When I say fix it, it means, maybe the way Colin Chapman intended, maybe not.
Hopefully this is the introduction @StressCraxx is looking for?

Welcome Alan,
Great you found this site. Enjoy your new Elan.
We must add, Lotus is an addictive disease. There is no cure. There is no 12 step program. You have fallen into a den of enablers and co-dependents..... So live it up!

There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

You got a great S3 Alan. Ian did a lot of work to it before he sold it. Welcome to Lotus, your now part of a very special club. I might suggest you join Lotus Ltd. and find a way to make it to a LOG (Lotus Owners Gathering) sometime in the next couple of years (they are held annually somewhere in the US. This year is Utah).

Congrats Alan- I think you have got a great car at a super price. I imagine it will be a fab drive. You have now taken care of any future unused free time or excess funds with an addictive accomplice. You are not likely to encounter any problem/question that hasn't been experienced by someone on this site. I can't imagine running an Elan without the kindly given advice here, usually with a bit of humor and sometimes cheek.

I think there was some interesting history with this car.
Can’t recall much, but before or if MrBonus disappears might be worth the ask?

Born, and brought home from the hospital (no seat belt (wtf)) in a baby!

Welcome Alan,
Your new toy is also a Super Safety, a late '67 S3 model. There are a number of unique SS features. The interior door latch handles are special, actually the whole interior of the doors. Gauges are recessed into the dash, so that the rims are not protruding (very dangerous). The SS may be the 1st English car to be fitted w/a dual brake master cylinder and most SS were fitted w/ bolt-on wheels. And there is a micro switch on the floor under the brake pedal that operates the "brake fail" light.
Enjoy enjoy
