I finally take some time to make an online HPI check to get the VIN :

In order to qualify for the HPI Check guarantee, the VIN (Chassis number) and V5 registration document details must be supplied before you buy the vehicle.
"VIN (chassis number) To be supplied"

?19.99 for this.. :|

Is anybody knows a way how could I get it ?

I also have the engine number, wich begins with 701M, is it correct ?

Many thanks.

Contacting DVLA mat be more helpful, as has been suggested before.

That is a block type number. The engine number should be a letter followed by 5 numbers for a Sprint.

Shame I can't manage to find more than 4 hours a week to work on the car..
But, I've done some work !

Engine bay is nearly completed, I need to plug the coil and the rev limiter (hidden in the glovebox), and I'm waiting for the airbox (SJ Sportscar).

Interior looks clean. I need to fix the steering column, and I don't know how to blackened the switches, brake fluid ?

New mirror !

Trunk.. I'm looking for a solution to hide the battery.. Any ideas ?

I have removed the front and rear screen seals
Image

Looks weird !

WIndscreen seal fitted, with plastic chrome

Rear seal is in

But I have a problem with the plastic chrome finisher :
Image
It's not large enough ! I have 13mm in the seal, and the plastic chrome makes 11,3m..

I have bought the seal from SJ, it's a Claytonrite type profile like this :

I've found this : http://www.coh-baines.co.uk/products/PT ... nsert.html

Do you think it'll be OK ? What have you used for your car ?

Your car looks very pleasing on the eye, keep it up.

Did you find the engine no.? It is located above the L on the right hand side engine mount, on the flat part. It should start with an N, but may be obscured by the rather fetching green paint.

Beautiful car! It's getting the love it deserves. Soon enough you'll be blasting around in it.

What a weird engine colour!

Yes I found the engine number. It starts with a P (+2 S I guess ?)

Image

And, yes, the green engine paint is quite.. special.. It's the "team coloring scheme" of the previous mechanic who has overhauled the engine. He used to work on Astons.
If he did that to my car, I would have hang him by the balls ! And he had the insolence to make the customer pay for the paint ! :o

I can't wait to drive it..

I think it's a great car with all the right bits, matching numbers or not. The obsession with matching numbers beyond the legality issues only comes down to market value, otherwise the car will provide everything an Elan should, no matter whether it's a genuine Sprint or not. Of course, finding out the history of it is fascinating and satisfying, but I'd much rather enjoy driving the car than obsess over the numbers.

drive and enjoy it. When you worry more about market value and matching numbers rather than driving pleasure your loosing the reason to own an Elan in the first place.

In fact the engine no on your block is LP4730, which was first fitted to an Elan that was invoiced from the factory on 31 Dec 65.

By the time Plus 2S 130 P prefix engines went into production the numbers were up in the 23### series.

Anybody got an idea for the plastic chrome finisher ? Where have you bought your rear seal ?

Thank you.

Alex,

Does your engine have a letter punched in the plug well near the No.1 spark plug like attached?

That its a Big Valve cylinder head, so not original to your engine block.

At the rear of the head, there is a web that joins the two cam covers. Below that, etched into the head at the bottom of the inverted T reinforcement where it abuts the block, will be the engine number, comprising a prefix letter followed by 5 numbers. Of course it is easy to see when the head is off. When the head is in the car it is best to use an inspection light and mirror. Please note that not all cylinder heads were stamped thus!
