A long time ago, when I was very much younger and in the army, our battalion spent four years doing winter warfare. I was sent to Norway on a cross-country ski instructors course, run by civilians. It was very good fun and over the course of the one month long course I really got into the whole cross-country ski racing scene, bought the kit, entered races and won a few.

I can recall on more than one occasion, on long ski training runs, having to remove one glove to stuff it down the front of the thin ski suit. It is a well known sports injury in Norway.

I should add that I suffered no long term effects, going on to father four children. My twelfth grandchild was born yesterday.
