Tariffs!

PostPost by: HCA » Wed Dec 16, 2020 9:26 am

Dithering over an order for a set of drop arm links for my Evora, I was reminded by the French dealer to get the order in soon, as after Dec 31, he might have to charge tariffs!

This is the first time the idiocy called brexit has hit me in the face so to speak, especially as the subject of tariffs in the news is aimed at the UK !

I am particularly annoyed that the straw haired liar has me both ways - I have two British cars in France and a German car in the UK... :( :)

You do not pay UK VAT, but you will have to pay TVA arriving here...

Basically, this nonsense, if it is not saved, puts the UK way offshore, any parts for our Lotus cars ordered in the UK will be sent here VAT free, where the courier will be asked to collect French TVA and any duties applicable. This is how it used to be manay many years ago, and I guess normal procedure for our Antipodean and American cousins, but of course alien to us!

However,my experience when I was in my USA muscle car phase was that it is hit or miss if duties are applied - I once had two cams and a head set for a Firebird arrive on my door step without request for duty, yet the next day, full duty and VAT on a set of Akebono rake pads...

Let us hope for our sakes in Europe tat a deal is struck!

But hope is there for us, as I write, the rate is inching up. So be positive...

Brexit "is what it is", more "patriotism" for some, a blue passport made in France and the "mackerel diet".

"B" will be of no use to UK car manufacturing. This is underlined by Honda and Ford closing, JLR producing the new Defender and Discovery in Slovakia, Mini relocating production to Leipzig and Graz in 2023 and Nissan proposing to close if a meaningful trade agreement is not found. Production of the Ineos Grenadier and Tesla batteries will not even start in the UK.

For old cars tariffs and VAT will be a headache. There is no relief on VAT for EU residents or citizens (despite this being available for the rest of the World). In addition, for purchases, EU VAT will be applicable plus tariffs if a trade agreement is not reached. This is not very helpful to either UK specialists or their customers.

This will delay my project but I can better appreciate the logistics for our pals in the US, Canada and Australia.

Red face is provocative, our Prime Minister was just under the gun for brown face...He’s rich, he can get away with it like trump and big business.

Well, I have done some of my best UK buying the last few days. Stuff I have been waiting on for years.
So not all bad, eh!

For what it may be worth I found Oakmere (Christopher Neils) best for Evora droplinks on price (v reasonable) and quality (good)

Thanks Jono! Apparantly Evoras shed droplinks like snakes their skin, so I have cancelled the order now and will make up rose jointed arms using components from McGill Engineering. It will be four times the price maybe but hopefully not an annual change!

If you mean the anti-roll bar bushes at the front wear out... yes they do, with a clunk

Yeah they eat both drop links and ARB bushes - did mine earlier this year and fitted poly bushes, made a big difference

The UK have made a perfectly good offer on Fisheries. What are the EU afraid of! Jim

Not 'afraid' of anything! They just want what is rightfully theirs - bear in mind it was the British skippers who sold fishing quotas to the EU skippers way back. The EU skippers just want to make sure they can continue the contract.

It would be akin to you selling me your car, and then say the Lotus Club deciding down the line that ownership of all cars must be under 40 and demanding I give my [your old] car back.

For as long as there is a straw haired liar in there it will go wrong. The UK should be building themselves Free Zone Enterprise areas and ports, and be making London into a tax haven to get back their dominance in world finance. This would frighten Europe, not wagging on about a depleted fish industry that barely supports 12,000 UK people.
