BOAC 500 Endurance - Brands Hatch

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Sat Mar 13, 2010 11:48 pm

The way it used to be:

http://meilenzwerg.de/D10/10/index-Dateien/BOAC.htm

There is only one Lotus (?), so just a tenuous link.
Nevertheless, I make no aplogies for a link to nostalgia.

Regards,
Stuart.

Hi Stuart,
i went to the race in my first car a Ford Anglia 105e. I seem to remember there was a special car that day. I think it was a Howmet or something like that which had a Turbine instead of a normal motor. Am i correct or is my memory playing up!!!!!

I was there just a few years later, drove there in my Elite & camped overnight. Lotus were no longer on the Grid; flavour of the Month was Ferrari (T330 I think)
Thanks for the memories, especially the Miniskirts & Hot Pants!
Those were the Days

"Those were the days"

Well times must have been hard then.

Seems the Ferrari works team turned up on the back of a Ford Transit !!!

Stuart.

Yup! definitely; no overpaid "Prima Donnas" back then.
And you could kick the Tyres of the Race Cars in the Paddock & talk to the Drivers & Mechanics.
I think it's the only thing that I'd like to wind the Clock back on :D

I tried to be in a Mini Skirt or Hot Pants as often as I could
The Elite kept me poor so no Camera or Pictures.

Good memories here. I suspect the teams were just as intent on winning back then, but it seems to be so more relaxed than today's racing. And to see the Europa dicing it up with the larger cars is priceless! Thanks for sharing.

I counted 3. The Elan and two Europas, one with snorkels and one without. Thanks for sharing that with us Stuart. I'll pass it along to our local club members.

Stuart,
The Chapparal 2F is my all time favourite racing car, I was there as a wide eyed 15 year old could not believe what I was seeing that wing flipping for braking at Paddock Hill bend just unreal and absolutely stunning. Many thanks for posting that film up I have never seen it before as I believed there was no official filming made. Wonderful, thanks again.

Alan,
The Howmet gas turbine car is in this years Classic Le Mans as it was in 2008. Brilliant to see it out racing again.
It raced in the 1968 race at Brands.
I will be at CLM to see that this year, again absolutely marvellous.
There are at least 4 Elans on the provisional entry list for the Le Mans Classic.
Can't wait.

Doug.

A friend here in Australia just got the no 3 chassis type 47 that was the non snorkel car in the race. The car is boxes of bits with a part restored body -- a lot of work to bring back to the track. He is still chasing the transmission and rear suspension that parted company from the rest of the car over time due to payment disputes.

cheers

Hi Doug,
you're right and it was 1968 for the Howmet. In 1967 i was still a Mod with my Lambretta SX200 and still trying not to fall off the dam thing when taking corners too fast

Hi Rohan,
I can remember watching Rex Colliver in his type 47 at Calder many years ago. Any idea what happened to it ?
Regards,
Peter.
