Toyota reliability! Pah!

What makes the big end nut undo after 23 years and 138000 miles? Did ten to twelve miles after the first clatter clatter, was on the motorway doing about 70 and the noise just grew and grew, very loud screaching and nails in tin cans noises - fortunately, mostly country lanes, gave the cyclists a good scare though. Good ol'Toyota, got me home. there was about 4-5 mm play on the conrod and the nut and bolt were lying in the sump...with the swarf.

If it's going to go ,it will and there's no predicting when!!!!
John
P.S. maybe you should fit genuine Lotus con-rods and Pistons?

Hi John, just reread my post... I'm not very clear but the piston and rod came out of my Toyota Corolla not the Elan... I'd be in big tears if it was out of the Elan - only had the engine rebuilt coupla years ago....

Ye Gods!
I thought I was the only person in the world still, ( occassionally), driving a Corolla of this age and mileage.
Bought in desperation when the Elan needed an unplanned engine rebuild and still around 18 years later, having passed on to one of the kids.
One of the first locally assembled Toyotas that Chris Amon sorted the suspension on before it went to market. Surprising amount of fun, drove a bit like a large Mini.
I don't find reliability boring at all........
Ralph.
