why the british have a soft spot for soft tops

off another post, David from California was puzzling why we british have such a passion for DHCs etc. especially as the weather is perceived to be so "bad"!
When hot sunny weather is such a scarce commodity , is it any wonder that we would take every opportunity to enjoy it?
At Easter we were over in San Diego CA and it was too hot at times during the day to have the softtop down ! (105 degrees F on one day - a record i know )
I'm sure other folks will have their pet theories too......

I'm a Brit from the North West of England. Yes we get our fair share of wet weather-this being our third wet summer in a row. However, my best drives top down are Spring and Autumn either early in the day when its just light and the roads are quiet or in the dark, again on empty roads. Even in Winter when its dry and cold. There is nothing worse than sitting in a traffic jam, hood down, 30 degrees C and no shelter from the sun.

Even when it's raining, as long as you're doing more than 30-40 it stays dry inside. The heavier the rain the faster you have to go...until the rain is whipping over the hood rail to make the inside of the screen wet! When it's really raining hard I get a saucer sized wet patch on the top of the barnet.
