Brian

Looks good, doesn't it?

I'm no 26R man, but I would say that is not the original steering wheel. I think I am right in saying that S2s (and thus 26Rs) had the wooden Springall steering wheel, which had slots and not holes in the spokes. I also have it in my mind that the 26R could be had with the then current Lotus racing red leather covered steering wheel, but that may just be my old brain!

Interesting point regarding Duchess Autos, my S1 was sold through them but it never left England. I have been told that it was one of Chapmans many money making scams.

wrong wheel - wholes vs slots - old pictures of the SMART elan and the John Miles Elan show a leather covered wheel with slots in the spokes -

The rumors I have heard are that if a car was sold in the U.S. then another with the same VIN number was sold out the back door for cash. Like I said "rumor", no one will ever know except for those with the cash that drove away in the duplicate. Someone I know said he was in that position with the cash in the early sixties. Is it true, I don't know as I wasn't there, I thought I was pretty lucky to be riding a 3 speed bicycle at the time.

here is the one from my 26R -s2 -33 --but a steering wheel can be changed as was mine for driver preference---------- -how ever I find the facts the car has 2 wipers for the windshield and the serial number disturbing -- I would think long and hard before cutting the cheque ----ed------------------------------------let the 'experts' begin pontificating -----

The slot in the console is for an ashtray and was there on early S1s (before the ashtrays moved to the doors).

Thank You SpeedModel for that steering wheel photo. Does that car have the oil warning light just off to the right of your picture? If yes, can you post a picture of it as well?

Thanks, Eric

Come by and have a look, we're practically neighbors. Is the S1 still ticking along?

Hello SpeedModel, yes the S1 is still ticking along, had it out today... hmmm, practically neighbors... sure I'll come for a look.... is it a 26r wheel? Mounted on a Shapecraft?

Ed, congratulations on further alienating yourself from about half the people on LotusElan.net with the NOBODY comment followed by one of those ludicrous emoticons. The problem in Edinburgh was no doubt something you said, not the t shirt.

well Eric -gthe pomposity of some of the 'experts' here confounds me ---they sit behind their computers and expound on what is and isn't Lotus correctness based on hearsay and opinions with little or no written evidence . Nobody has even come by to see my car but they purport to all know all about what it is and isnt and cannot be . BTW try to experience a little humour once in a while --life's too short -- :) heres a fortune cookie for you 'IT APPEARS YOU CONFUSE EASILY' [CONFUSES] now I must be off to rebuild my 7 tranny as the main nut has come loose and important bits have exited with the hypoid --you should be able to make some thing of that --ed
