Shipping bearings from UK to US

PostPost by: gjz30075 » Mon Feb 01, 2021 6:02 pm

Hi all, I had an ebay seller refund my recent purchase of a set of bearings because, as he
stated, they are items that aren't allowed to be posted. Can any of our UK members shed
some light on this statement?

Might be his company policy?

If there is no real reason for this, can I have a UK member work with me for this purchase?
Thanks

Perhaps it's just an export thing where we don't want precision engineering sent to the third world...........gets coat.

Happy to help. So long as there isn't some strange law I don't know about they could be sent to me and I'll post to you at cost.

Ebay has national postage centres I believe. In Canada, we ship to an address near Toronto. In the USofA its Kentucky somewhere I think. The UK is similar I am sure, and it keeps ebay (i think amazon does it too) in control as they are providing the listing.

Now that I look, it might have changed recently. So who knows?

I once heard this mentioned - by Chris T. of Sevens and Elans - several years ago. "Don't call them bearings on the shipping document." Something to do with import/export regulations?

But I've never had any problems. I've had bearings shipped from Burton, Sue Miller (both UK) and 123Bearing (France) in the last year (plain, thrust, needle roller and ball bearing roller).

I don't think the Customs and Border Patrol folk are going to be knocking on your door in the middle of the night for a few eBay bearings! I gather they are doing other rock fetches. But if they do and you suddenly need to sell your lovely Sprint, let me know! :-)

Greg,

Back in 2018 I bought and posted some gearbox parts, that included bearings, and posted to Canada for an Elan owner. There did not seem to be a problem, let me know if I can help.

Have to laugh. About 10 years ago, I ordered a pair of new king pins for the Sabra, same as a Triumph Mayflower. Waited and waited for them to arrive. They finally did a couple of months later with a printed notice on the package that could not be shipped by air as being hazardous. I think they came on a tramp steamer the long way around. I have had all the kit needed to install a 3.54 ring and pinion, including bearings from Burton's with no problems.
