Compression tester

PostPost by: Robbie693 » Thu May 03, 2018 8:53 am

Any recommendations?

I've looked at Gunson, Draper (looks same as Gunson), Clarke, Sealey (looks same as the Clarke) and Laser (Halfords) but have no idea of their quality...

Thanks

Robbie, I can't comment on the comparative quality / accuracy of the individual brands mentioned, but I have a Gunson's vacuum gauge that is something like 30 years old and it is still going strong.

I've just used it, in fact: lotus-twincam-f39/compression-test-t41474.html

I have the Gunson and the Laser compression tester. Both came from Halfords (Gunson one 12 years ago, Laser one 2 years ago). Both do the job, but personally the Laser one feels better made. On the Laser one the gauge detaches from the pipe while it is permanently attached on the Gunson one. I would happily use either. I only bought the Laser one because I was in a hurry (as usual), and it was easier than trying to find where I'd hidden the Gunson...

BTW, the Laser one is a lot cheaper here than at Halfords:

Same price as the Clarkes one (which I have no experience of):

I would not put too much faith in compression testers

I used one which seemed to show everything was ok , then I tried a leak down tester and that also showed everything ok.

Knowing my engine smoked and ran rough I eventually stripped it down and had the bores measured , 5 thou wear so a + 20 rebore was done.

I've not yet redone the tests , but no smoke quite smooth and I'm almost at 200 miles on the rebuilt engine.
