Rear Hub Puller

I bought these a while back off FleaBay, but used them for the first time last night. Absolute bliss, nothing better than using the correct tool for the job!! Compared to all the messing around in the past with 3 legged hub pullers! Just thought I'd share that.

If only bolt-on hubs had such an easy tool available.

I have a puller for the bolt-on hubs that was originally for a triumph so they are available; it's a bit like this:

It still needs a fairly alarming amounts of force and heat if the hub is really well seated, but at least the hub doesn't get bent and you still have all your fingers.

Thank you, Paddy. It's cheaper than a new hub which was my last experience. There have been so many descriptions of constructions to do the job that I assumed there was nothing on the market.

It doesn't seem to have any apertures to let the heat directly onto the taper but I accept your judgement on its efficiency.

I have one of the SJS versions as well - I think I bought mine from CN's though. You use the spinner to apply force to the puller and thence to the hub and - eventually - it comes off. The amount of force I've had to apply at times though has been frightening - much more than you'd use when fastening the wheel on.

When I bought it (decades ago) it was all that I could find but if there's an alternative that screws onto the threads I'd probably go with one of those if I was buying now. The insides of a couple of my spinners show signs of, well lets just call it distress :(

I got this one from Ray at rdent.com in the 'States :)...

Elan Knock-On Hub Removal Tool

Remove Elan rear KO hubs with this specially designed tool and eliminate chances of bending or breaking your rear hubs. This tool threads directly onto the hub while the center bolt presses on the end of the axle shaft. One tool works for both RH and LH hubs!

Rear Hub Puller - DIY ? Bolt On Wheel Hub S1-S2 elan.

It is not that hard to fabricate a DIY version to remove bolt on hubs safely and with out damage.

Yeh I have a big tool too :mrgreen: .................had it for nearly 40 years........always assumed it was the official approved Lotus tool with combined LH RH thread at each end and made from a solid piece.

I must have removed over 100 hubs over the years with it and never had to use heat. Once some pressure has been applied even worse case only had to tap the end of the bolt head.

One thing I have always done though is loosen the nyloc hub nut till flush with the hub end and place a 3mm metal circular disc over the end of the stub shaft and nut that the tools centre bolt then presses against. This prevents any risk of swelling the the threaded end of the hub shaft if a lot of force has to be used and when the hub does break free a large lump of metal ending up in your lap.

I assume the small groove on the outside of stuglimours is the standard identifying mark seen often on LH threaded nuts as mine does not have this groove.
