Spyder rear bearing housing

PostPost by: englishmaninwales » Mon Apr 01, 2024 8:01 pm

So I’ve got a failing LHS rear bearing to deal with. But the car has a replacement Spyder steel fabricated bearing housing. Are there any ‘gotchas’ with this type compared to the standard Lotus aluminium housing? In the past I’ve just heated up the original Lotus aluminium housing and knocked the axle out, after removing the retaining circlips.
Thanks for any advice.

And you want to do exactly the same with the Spyder housing Malcolm. The housing will heat up quicker than the bearing it retains, therefore easing removal.

Spyder housing is made of steel, bearings located by large circlips on both sides, inner side circlips are held in grooves in a straight bore. All straight forward IIRC.

So 4 circlips in total?

Yes 2 inside, the inner has two grooves cut so that it will accommodates the wide or narrow bearing. Idea being, no need to machine a step in the housing. Bearings are removed as the Lotus from inside out the inside circlips remain in place.

Hi Malcolm,

Would you mind posting the bearing manufacturer part numbers here (rather than Spyder P/N's). I've recently inherited my Fathers +2 Zetec and slowly building up a list of OE part numbers for as and when I eventually need them.

Thank you :)

Will do. Bearing housing is still on the car, waiting for a break in other life stuff so I haven’t ordered the bearings yet.
