Fitting 'rimbellishers'

My 68 Plus 2 came with really nice period stainless wheel trims.

I've had the steel wheels powder coated silver and they look great as they are but I'm erring towards fitting the trims once again.

Problem is the trims have these awful pointed metal grippers which are going to gouge into the new powder coating.

Has anyone found a way to fit them without the grippers? Happy to cut them off or otherwise neuter them if I can find a way to fit them in a way that they can be removed if I wish without leaving the fresh powder coat disfigured.

Yes the rimbellisher metal grips will definitely scratch your newly sprayed wheels but if you cut them or neuter them too much then the rimbellisher won't stay on the rim will it. It is the only method that they use to stay on the rim.
The solution I used was to use electrical shrink on each gripper to try and lessen or eliminate the scratching and so far the rimbellishers have stayed on the rims but I was concerned that they would then come off when going around a corner.
So far they appear to be still firmly on. I haven't taken the rimbellishers off the rims since I did it about a year ago so I can't really say how much they have now still scratched the rims.
