Plus 2 Rack Query

PostPost by: 111Robin » Tue Mar 22, 2022 5:11 pm

My rack has a free floating sleeve on the right end (RHD), presumably this is the full lock stop ?. It isn't shown in the factory manual assembly drawing hence the question. It looks like it may be shown in the dimensioned cross sectional view but it's not too clear.

Thanks Leslie.
I've decided to just fit new cups and reshim the tie rods as there doesn't appear to be much else wrong with it. Time will tell.

Robin
Whilst its apart just check the main rack for trueness, when the rack is a little worn this does not always show, but when overhauled and re-shimmed, it can be then when any distortion becomes apparent, so worth a quick check now.

Robin

Also check non pinion end bush as this is the source of MOT failures and there should be a nylon plug in the hole near the non pinion clamping point. all available from Rimmer bros.

Are the rack and pinion straight out of a Spitfire rack ?. Just for reference when I'm looking at Rimmers for parts.

Yes for the bush and nylon plug

I think SJS sell the bush for the nylon plug, I have the dimensions to make.

Robin
Somewhere on the forum there is a posting about overhauling the rack, with comments about which parts need checking, but more important it explained the couple of parts that were modified by Lotus when they decided to use the Spitfire rack. These parts will already be fitted to your rack, so the parts you will need to purchase will mainly be the gaiters and fluid.

It may be worth you looking for the posting I mention because I seem to recall there were a couple of pictures. But if not then YouTube has a run through to help, the parts you will need can come from any of the usual Lotus people or for that matter any of the Triumph parts suppliers.
Good luck

Yes thanks, I have contacted them previously however my rack doesn't need a full overhaul at the moment. If/when it does I will be using them.

On another point, when I tighten the clamps they are tending to be pulled off the rubbers as the U bolt is offset to one side of the rubber, as you would expect. I have found a photo of another clamp that has additional supports presumably to prevent this from happening. Was this a later modification or are my clamps just missing these parts ?. My clamp is the second photo.
