Any trials, tribulations. Length, compression figures out there?
The one on the left, ends up compressing about the same.
Right, made in USA and more flexible.
KYB says the one on the right should not exist. Wanna bet its old stock, and most likely even though it would not come into effect until later. The softer, more flexible nature is of more interest because the longer one most likely will come into play too soon.

Looks a lot like the one that comes with a KYB SB101 boot.

Anyone think the softer shorter one would be better for fast road suspension, longer for a taller touring suspension?
If the progressive aeon comes into play too early, it limits total travel? If it can compress too much, it doesnt offer enough?

In general with modern tyres the rear of an elan is to soft and it sits down on the outside rear wheel in corners to much, potentially causing sudden roll over steer. This is made worse by people who go to small diameter rear springs of standard rate and delete the Aeons as they dont fit.
Having the rubber secondary spring at the rear come into play earlier and be a bit stiffer than the original design Aeon is no bad thing in my experience with modern tyres.
Many other factors also come into play also such as front and rear spring rates, damper rates, front roll bar size, fitting a rear roll bar, alignment, camber and caster and tyres along with personal handling preferences so commenting on just one factor hard to be specific on.
cheers
Rohan

I confirm what Rohan says about the original Aeons. Speaking from personal experience, I had the incorrect rear bump stops in the elan for many years, but then purchased the proper rubber Aeons from RD Ent and installed them... what a difference they make to the way the rear suspension behaves. The rear springs in the S2 are 90mm OD sitting on adjustable spring platforms, I also use the 22mm riser that sits on top of the damper/strut body.

Our sons' favorite ride as well. I even added a seat belt bolted to the diff mounting bolts, so one son could ride on the top of the backbone.

Ha, me too! The older two boys weigh too much for them to be allowed in, and definitely would not fit on hump.
I should get busy measuring compressing forces, modern vs aeon. The original Timbren ones are made here in Canada, unfortunately the online catalogue was difficult. I see they changed it a bit.

Any guesses if Chucky would have opted for synthetic progressive springs if they were available at the time. Suppose the added advantage is oil resistance. Though maybe the little bits of oil would be from the shocks. The disadvantage is they are made in China, and I am getting more and more sick of all this corporate world trade sucking the health of the planet and my children for a few worthless dollars.

I was looking at spacers, original rubber aeon style. Then add these spacers to introduce earlier.
Also looking at some bump stop springs

FYI
Compression reading of Aeons at various compression heights
Original Aeon has a height of 80mm
@70mm compression = 25KG
@60mm " " = 30KG
@50mm " " = 40KG
@40mm " " = 84KG
@35mm " " = 120KG (Fully compressed)
The original Aeon is an extremely important part of the rear suspension set up. I ran my S2 for without them for far to many years, and it wasn't until they were installed during a complete rear suspension rebuild and overhaul did I realize what a difference they make.
of you can obtain the the original design Aeon's, buy them and install. I bought mine off Ray at RDEnt many years ago, not sure if they still have in stock or not.
