Brake pads

PostPost by: gherlt » Wed Jan 27, 2021 3:48 pm

I had a look at the mintex website, http://www.mintex.brakebook.com/bb/mint ... arch.xhtml
Ford Escort is the only one listed, with RS1600 and RS2000 variants being listed. (Brake system is "Lucas" ??) These cars seem to be equipped with P16 and later with M16 calipers, Mintex offers only one pad with ref. MGB633
And those are offered (elsewhere) as M16 pads.
So, no P16 pads ?

"Lucas" is Girling. Mk1 Escort Mexico, Twincam, & RS1600's were fitted with P16, Mk2's with M16.

Mintex pad for P/PB16 calipers as fitted to the early plus 2 is MGB525. Available in 1144 compound here :- https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/mi ... B525-M1144
Brian.

Ferodo appear not to list pads for P/PB16 calipers ,but there is a suggestion to enlarge the pin holes on the later pads...
".Competition brake pads for the Girling M16/P16 brake caliper. This caliper was fitted to many cars over the years including Ford Escort Mk2, Ford Capri, Ford Cortina, Triumph TR4/5/6. Please use the Compound Information tab below to help you determine which of the available brake compounds is best suited to your application

Please Note: The Girling P16 Caliper has slightly larger pad retaining pins so the holes in the pad may need to be enlarged."

The original Girling pad number for the rear of any and all Elans is 64325418. Any pad supplier Ferodo, Mintex, Green stuff etc should be able to cross reference the above number to a number in their system if they can supply one. I had rear pads for my Elan already on the shelf because they are the same pads used on the front of my special Austin-Healey Sprite.

Hi , I am new to this forum and the world of Elans.
I have seen it posted on this site that the best way to stop the handbrake pads from rubbing is to place a spring
in-between. I believe it was 1/2" Dia. x 2" Lg. x .062" wire.
I am having difficulty sourcing this spring, probably because I am in Canada!
Any source info would be appreciated.

The rear pads are never going to be easy to get as special materials but they do not do nearly the work that the fronts do.Those might have to be machined from a larger pad. Brake material choices are a personal choice. High initial bite is not for everyone and very high is only for cars with downforce so that eliminates half of them. Ideally something where the coefficient of friction increases with increasing temperature but not too rapidly. This will give the car a chance to settle itself under braking before the turn in and prevent lockups and spins

HI, Welcome to the Forum.

As designed the handbrake pads are held off the disc by two L shaped centralising strips as shown below. These bend as the pads wear and need to be reshaped or replaced when pads are renewed to be effective. The springs you refer to are not original fitment but are often added to assist with holding the pads off the discs.

A suitable spring is available form Kelvedon Lotus in the UK but that's probably not cost effective given your location. Any off the shelf suitably sized compression spring will do the job just make sure it doesn't become coil bound as the pads wear.

I just purchased a spring from Lowes. I don't think the specifics of the spring are too critical. It added just to help avoid the weight of handbrake arms (parts 5/7 in diagram) pushing the pads against the disc while driving. Very little force is required to counter act that force, so you just need a spring that is about the correct size to fit between them with handbrake engaged and un-engaged.

Thank you oldelanman (me too now) & mbell.
We have a Lowes in the next town over or I will check it out online
If not I will definitely be needing more parts and could source other stuff from Kelvedon
I was reluctant to use the ones from the local hardware store as they just seemed to be too light
I did re-form the centralizing strips when I rebuilt the calipers but wanted to add this secondary spring as insurance against premature wear.

In my unservo'd S4 with +2 calipers I have green stuff at present and would not recommend them.
Very underwhelming and looking for an opportunity to swap to Mintex.

Mintex 1144 front pads. Demon Tweeks website states that these do not fit an S3 Elan - any comments from users who seem to recommend them? D

Where do you see that on the website? If you search by vehicle, that pad is among those listed as suitable for a 1967 Elan
