Brake lights stopped working

PostPost by: vibrodolly » Sat Mar 26, 2016 12:41 pm

Hello everyone.
I have and early F reg +2 (I'm told it's the 3rd oldest)
A friend helped me before and the solution was the wires had come off the sender switch.

I can't find this switch to check this fault. Could somebody help me locate it please?
Thanks

Nick

It's near the oil filter if it's in the same place as mine

Nick, My Plus 2 is much younger than yours but, for what it's worth, my brake light switch (a plunger type switch) is mounted on the front face of the pedal box, located within the engine bay.

Those responses are probably confusing without further explanation.

I am not sure of the situation on the Plus 2, but on the two seater Elan there have been TWO kinds of brake light switch.

One is a hydraulic pressure switch and so it is fitted in the hydraulic pipe system and in the Elan is screwed into a 5 way junction which is mounted on the chassis near the oil filter.

The second type is a simple microswitch activated by the position of the brake pedal, so of course that is mounted somewhere near the brake pedal levers.

If yours is a hydraulic switch plugged into the brake pipe union, the currently available switches seem to be of very dubious quality. On the MG board that I also inhabit there have been many complaints of these hydraulic switches failing only a few months after being installed, whereas the originals lasted for decades. For that reason I fitted my 2-seater Elan with the pedal mechanical switch rather than attempt to find a good quality hydraulic one.

The cable can get pulled off when the oil filter is changed - from my own experience
